Work was under way this time of year in 1968 to repair the bank opposite Boston General Hospital.

The bank had slipped the previous year, leading to part of the road being roped off. The repairs would cost £16,000 (more than £200,000 in today’s money) and take about three months to complete. The first four weeks of the scheme would be devoted to piling. The original piles, put there in 1938, had given way.
